What calm, focus, and learning have in common

It's auditory processing: how the brain makes sense of sound. The Listening Program® is neuroscience-based music listening therapy designed to calm the nervous system and train listening skills.

The missing piece

Calm, focus, learning, connection: each one leans on listening

Families tell us what they hope for: a child who stays calm when the room gets loud, focuses long enough to learn, and learns without all the stress. A child who makes friends, catches the nuance in a conversation, and grows more independent.

Each of those hopes leans on listening, the brain's ability to make sense of sound. It's called auditory processing, and it has been the focus of our work with The Listening Program® for more than 25 years. It's at work all day:

Calm
Staying settled when a room gets loud
Focus
Picking out the teacher's voice over the noise
Learning
Catching every word of a quick instruction
Connection
Following a group conversation, and the tone behind it, at a busy lunch table

Sensitivity to sound: when everyday noise feels like too much

For some children and adults, everyday sounds can feel like too much: a cafeteria, a hand dryer, a crowded hallway. Research has linked this kind of sensitivity to sound with anxiety and, in some studies, with stress signals in the body, such as a faster heart rate. Stress makes it harder to settle, to focus, and to hold information in mind. And the places where friendships happen, like the lunchroom and the playground, are often the loudest.

The good news: how the brain responds to sound can change with practice. That is what The Listening Program is built for. Here is how one family discovered it.

What happens when they listen

Calm and focused today. Learning and connection that build from there.

Every session is built to help them finish calm and focused. The music is original classical recordings by the Arcangelos Chamber Ensemble, recorded in high definition and neuroacoustically modified, meaning the sound itself is adjusted to train how the brain processes what it hears.

Inside every session: the ABC Modular Design™

Each 15-minute session eases in, builds, and settles, so the listener finishes calm and focused. All 15 minutes are training.

  1. Warm Up5 minutes · eases in
  2. Train5 minutes · the most intensive
  3. Cool Down5 minutes · eases out

Frequencies affect function

From low notes to high notes, the music supports different skills

TLP music is arranged in four frequency zones, from low notes to high, and each listener's personalized program includes all four. Each zone is linked with different everyday skills, and within each zone, levels rise as the listener progresses.

What this zone is designed to support

  • Focusing with body and mind together
  • Paying attention and listening closely
  • Being present and engaged
  • Staying steady and settled
  • Starting the day organized and ready

The research

20+ years of peer-reviewed research. Here’s what it shows.

The Listening Program has been studied in peer-reviewed research for more than 20 years. Two studies stand out: one on listening skills, and one on sensitivity to sound.

2020 · International Journal of Listening

Butler, Schueler, and Lucker: 456 participants, ages 5 to 50

After about 10 months of TLP, average scores rose on all four SCAN auditory processing subtests.

Average percentile rank compared with same-age peers. The dashed line marks the 50th percentile, average for age.

  • Filtered Words (understanding muffled speech)d = 1.79Before22ndAfter59th
  • Auditory Figure-Ground (hearing words in background noise)d = 1.79Before18thAfter56th
  • Competing Words (listening when two words arrive at once)d = 1.66Before12thAfter38th
  • Competing Sentences (following one speaker while another talks)d = 0.91Before19thAfter41st

What this means: on average, participants moved from about the 18th percentile to about the 48th, close to the middle for their age. An effect size (d) above 0.8 is considered large; three of the four were above 1.6.

What this means: all six started in the definite dysfunction range. Five of six reached the some problems or typical range, and the group kept improving for three months after listening ended.

A pilot: six boys, no control group, ratings reported by parents, and the children continued their other therapies. Conducted at Children’s Health in Dallas, with funding from Children’s Health and UT Southwestern. ABT discounted the equipment, which the study disclosed.

Every listener’s progress is different, and these are individual experiences. For results across a larger group, see the 2020 study above: after about 10 months of listening, average scores for its 456 participants rose from about the 18th to about the 48th percentile on four auditory processing tests.

Headphones

How the music reaches the brain matters too

The Listening Program is designed for specific headphones and may not be effective with others, so approved headphones are required. Waves was created for The Listening Program.

Waves Air & Bone Conduction Headphones

The music, heard through the ears and felt through the body

Most headphones carry sound one way, through the air. Waves adds bone conduction: gentle vibration carried through the bones of the skull to the inner ear. That second path is designed to give every session more to work with.

What Waves is designed to add

Calm you can feel

The gentle vibration is felt in the body as well as heard, designed to help the nervous system settle, especially for listeners who find everyday sound too much.

Hearing their own voice

Bone conduction is how we hear ourselves speak. Waves is designed to strengthen that inner signal, to support speech, voice control, and communication.

Body awareness and balance

The inner ear also manages balance and movement. Waves is designed to support coordination and a sense of where the body is.

More from the low notes

The large bone conductor brings extra power to the low frequencies of the Green Zone, the zone linked with calm, comfort, and coordination.

Deeper focus

Hearing and feeling the music together makes listening more immersive, designed to help listeners stay present and engaged.

A gentle start

Separate volume controls for air and bone conduction let sensitive listeners begin low and build up. Rechargeable, with 15 or more hours of listening per charge.

Add Waves

Or start with approved standard headphones

  • Open designs that keep the room audible: Sennheiser HD599 or HD559
  • Closed designs that block outside sound: AKG K72, K361, or K361 Bluetooth

Not suitable for TLP: earbuds or in-ear headphones, noise-cancelling headphones, bass-boost headphones, bone-conduction-only headphones, and gaming headphones.

Questions

Questions about TLP Online

How is The Listening Program different from listening to classical music?

TLP uses original recordings made for the program and performed by the Arcangelos Chamber Ensemble. Each recording is neuroacoustically modified to stimulate specific listening skills, and every module follows ABT's ABC Modular Design™, which builds, peaks, and eases the intensity of the training from start to finish, with Spatial Surround® sound. Every program uses all four frequency zones, and the Quick Brain Scale then sets a step-by-step program for each listener.

Who is TLP Online for?

Ages 2 and up: children, teens, adults, and seniors. Each listener takes the Quick Brain Scale, which sets their own starting point, so one Family plan can cover listeners of different ages.

How much time does it take?

There are three schedules, so listening can fit each listener: 15 minutes once a day, 15 minutes twice a day, or 30 minutes once a day. Each one runs five days a week, with two days off. Many listeners start with one 15-minute session a day. Finish each day's listening at least three hours before bedtime.

How long does it take to notice changes?

Every listener moves at their own pace. Music can change how a listener feels while it plays, and the training is designed for regular listening over months, the way a fitness routine builds over time. The published TLP studies involved many months of listening; the 2026 study ran for 40 weeks.

Can TLP be used alongside other therapies?

Yes. The Listening Program is designed to be used alongside other therapies, such as occupational or speech therapy. A TLP Certified Provider can help fit it into the week.
