How it was recorded Played as gently as they would for their own babies. Before the recording sessions, music director Richard Lawrence asked every musician to bring a photograph of their own child, or a child they felt close to. During each session, they played with that photo in front of them. The idea came from a study showing that listeners could tell whether a mother was singing with her infant in the room. Richard wanted that same tenderness in the playing. So Vivian Stanley on flute, Ingrid Sweeney on violin, Sarah Vornoy on harp and Larry David on celeste slowed down, lengthened their notes and played for the child in the picture. Richard and co-producer Alex Doman chose each piece for young listeners: lullabies from French, English and Welsh traditions, nursery rhymes, folk songs, and bright, simple works by Mozart. The instruments were chosen the same way: harp, celeste, violin, viola, cello, clarinet and flute. Ever heard a celeste? It’s the sparkling sound in Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
