When Christina Tourin was called to the bedside of Geri, a terminal cancer patient at San Diego Hospice who was paralyzed from the waist down, she found a former dancer weeping, “How I wish I could dance again!” Tourin came up with a plan to help Geri realize her dream by dancing with her hands and arms to the music of the harp, recording her performance on videotape as a gift for her loving family. Tourin was surprised at the enthusiasm with which Geri took up the idea, preparing for her performance by supervising the creation of the set, discussing special effects, giving it the name “DANCE in the Clouds,” and applying makeup before the cameras rolled. Here, you can see the result—an artistic expression that not only provided her family with a precious memento, but greatly improved Geri’s sense of physical well-being in the process, improved her morale, and thus may have contributed to her surviving for more than a year longer than expected.
